- Suicide due to imminent deportation to Italy in Lager in Eisenhüttenstadt
- Still, no accommodation for refugees from Libya
- District Office of Hamburg-Mitte banishes war victims from park
- Hamburg Parliament discussed the situation in open session without results
- Solidarity from the population continues to grow slowly
- The group "Lampedusa in Hamburg" unmasked the true face of their democracy
Yesterday night we achieved the sad news that a refugee in Eisenhüttenstadt (Brandenburg) has put an end to his life. Juma (25 years), fled from Chad and was meant to be deported to Italy today. We get much information through the "Lampedusa in Hamburg" group about the catastrophic conditions in Italy, and it provides the answer to why the Italian Government reacted that way on the refusal of the rich European states to share responsibility. Therefore, there is also no way back, no matter how stubborn Germany and other countries want to be. The Dublin-System has failed long ago, but only the political pressure and the gathering of those affected - the union of the refugee struggles - can bring a real change. We call on all to join us and to break the isolation in the Lagers. Alone only death awaits. We grieve for Juma and will not forget.
In Hamburg, the emergency situation for the refugees from Libya remains acute due to the blockade of the Senate. Today nine people were taken to medical treatment, so that this number will increase to over 20, most diseases are pneumonia, fever and body aches. There are now two people in charge of Libyan-group in the protest tent who receive the cases and contact the independent Medibüro office and since today with two other doctors showing solidarity who set up a provisional treatment room and offer medical evaluation and care once a week. Shamelessly the social authority, spread the information, that they would organize medical care - a barefaced lie - caused by the growing critical public. The city does nothing but to threaten the people "you must return to Italy." There still is no accommodation, they only play around that the press and the public, telling them that they are making efforts but it would be oh so difficult to find something. They only play for time, exert themselves further in failure to render assistance in an emergency situation and are lying to the public. The fact is that the help and solidarity of individuals, especially young people and grassroots groups under the coordination of anti-racist group of "Atesh" is organized.
At this morning one of the NATO war survivors brought a letter from the District Office Hamburg-Mitte to the protest tent. He had found it him in his little tent. For weeks he sleeps along with six others in a public park, several of them together in the two-person tent and the other under carpets, which are spread over two park benches. The letter of the district office urges them under the threat of coercive measures to leave that place and take their belongings with them until 3 pm at the same day. Before this could happen, they packed up their few belongings completely soaked by the rain in two plastic bags and left the place. One of them has spent seven years working in Libya for a German construction company and very decent living as he says, until the day the bombings started.
Later that day the Hamburg Parliament had a public debate at the request of the party „Die Linke“on the situation of refugees from Libya. "Emotions will lead to nothing" rang someone from the leading party „SPD“and the social Senator Scheele explained to the refusal of the city to issue a permit for the erection of large tents, in all audacity: - Tents will not do it with me, it is not reasonable for the affected people in this weather and their condition – while avoiding eye contact with some representatives of the "Lampedusa in Hamburg" group that were among the listeners. One of them commented. - They are like pashas your so called Democrats -. - Here in Hamburg we got to know the whole hypocrisy of their democracy and their human rights -
In the evening again many caring people came to protest tent. For next Friday, a protest rally in front of a federal election kick-off event with the members of the Hamburg SPD Johannes Kahrs, and the Mayor, Olaf Scholz is announced.
