Colonial Injustice in Germany
Since the so-called asylum compromise in 1993 which marked the beginning of the concerted and unrelenting attack on refugee rights in Germany, countless numbers of refugees have been unjustly deported to countries with neither guarantee of personal security nor human dignity. Those who have managed to defeat or defy the deportation regime that is lubricated by societal and institutional racism and discrimination have remained secluded in isolated Lagers throughout this country with inhuman and unbearable living conditions.
However, in keeping with the long tradition of The VOICE and the Caravan for the rights of refugees and migrants in Germany, refugees all over the country are resisting and refusing to accept such dehumanising conditions. We are courageously standing up for our rights to be treated and respected as normal human beings. Nowhere has this resistance been more evident than in Thuringia since the last several years. From Katzhütte to Gehlberg and Apolda amongst others, refugee activists have taken this struggle not only to the general public but to the authorities as well. Through our struggle against the inhuman conditions that we are subjected to here, we are again showing the direct connection of our presence here to the reasons for our flight from our home countries. We are showing that “we are here because you destroy our countries”.
The Caravan Conference “Unite Against Colonial Injustice” brings together refugee activists and human rights campaigners all over the country to exchange views and experiences of the last couple of years and to consolidate the burgeoning network of refugees in Germany. The 5-day event which will be coordinated by The VOICE will cover a range of topical issues of particular interests to refugees and migrants in Germany.
Among the issues scheduled for discussion are: The Preparation of the Independent Commission on Oury Jalloh, The Residenzpflicht, Intensified Deportation, Police Brutality including strategies of mobilisation, Alliances and Solidarity, etc. Other Activities includes Photo Exhibition and Documentation, Live Performances, Percussion and Films.
