Documentary film about the Caravan-Festival 2010 in Jena

„United against colonial injustice – in memory of the dead victims of fortress Europe“ – this was the slogan of a three-days political festival in Jena
An Initiative of The VOICE Refugee Forum and Organized together with Caravan for the Rights of Refugees and Migrants, that took place in June 2010 in Jena. AKABA follows the long-lasting process of preparations, portrays the political discussions, which formed the idea and the realization of the festival and partly shows the concerts, discussions, workshops and demonstrations, that took over the city of Jena on this hot weekend in June. The mask procession turns out to be the focus of the film. Due to an old nigerian custom, the mask brings back to life those, who deceased in uncertain circumstances. Represented by the Masquerade, that were produced solely for the festival, all the victims of the deadly policy of fortress Europe came back to the streets of Jena.
The film succeeds to give a deeper impression of the variety of people who were involved and the difficulties, that are including in the attempt to organize a non-commerical festival of such a size. Many of the main activists from The CARAVAN Network for the rights of refugees and nigrants and The VOICE Refugee Forum are given time to sepak and explain their view on the festival and the artistic way of presenting a critical position towards society and their own political struggle.
While the festival took place three years ago and the film premieres soonly, the keyword of „Lampedusa“ recently woke up the public and politics. Not only since the last boat accidents, refugees demonstrated under the slogan of „Lampedusa is everywhere“ against the European border regime. It's three years now since the fetsival in Jena, but its message has never been more current.
The filmmaker will be present druing the premiere in Jena, so that there is the possibility of a discussion with her and some of the protagonists of the festival.

Dokumentarfilm zum Karawane-Festival 2010 in Jena von Mehrandokht Feizi
„Vereint gegen koloniales Unrecht – in Erinnerung an die Toten der Festung Europa“ – unter diesem Slogan fand im Juni 2010 ein dreitägiges politisches Festival in Jena statt, initiiert von The VOICE Refugee Forum und organisiert gemeinsam mit der KARAWANE für die Rechte der Flüchtlinge und MigrantInnen. AKABA begleitet den langwierigen Vorbereitungsprozess, bildet die politischen Diskussionen ab, aus denen Idee und Ausgestaltung des Festivals hervorgingen sowie die Konzerte, Diskussionen, Workshops und Demonstrationen, die an jenem heißen Juniwochenende die Jenaer Innenstadt in Beschlag nahmen. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei die Maskerade, die gemäß eines nigerianischen Brauchs jene Verstorbenen zurück zum Leben erweckt, deren Todesumstände ungeklärt sind. In Gestalt der Masken, die eigens für das Festival angefertigt wurden, erhielten somit all jene Einzug in Jenas Straßen, die der tödlichen europäischen Abschottungspolitik zum Opfer gefallen waren.
Der Film vermittelt einen Eindruck von der Vielfalt der beteiligten Personen und den Schwierigkeiten, die ein nicht-kommerzielles Festival in dieser Größenordnung mit sich bringt. Viele der beteiligten Aktivist_innen von der KARAWANE und The VOICE kommen zu Wort und erläutern ihre Sicht auf das Festival und die künstlerischen Darbietungen von Gesellschaftskritik und politischem Kampf.
Während das Festival nun drei Jahre zurückliegt und der Film in Jena Premiere feiern wird, hat kürzlich das Schlagwort „Lampedusa“ Öffentlichkeit und Politik aufgeweckt. Nicht erst seit den jüngsten Schiffsunglücken demonstrieren Flüchtlinge unter dem Slogan „Lampedusa is everyhwere“ gegen das europäische Grenzregime. Das Jenaer Festival liegt drei Jahre zurück, seine Aussage ist damit jedoch aktueller denn je.
Zur Premiere am 18.12.2013 im Kino im Schillerhof wird die Regisseurin Mehrandokht Feizi anwesend sein. Es besteht die Möglichkeit zum Austausch mit ihr und weiteren Protagonist_innen des Films.
