Fwd: In support of Ibrahim Peyon
Favorit Dear Pastor Friedrich Tometten,
It is with a heavy heart that I write to you as I am gravely concerned for the safety of my West Papuan brother, Ibrahim Peyon. Ibrahim is, like me, from the remote highlands of West Papua and is one of the few highly educated people from this region.
As you are aware, Ibrahim has been blacklisted by the Indonesian authorities because of his participation in the Papua Partnership Seminar earlier this year and his writings concerning the International Parliamentarians for West Papua, an organisation which I founded.
This blacklisting means that returning to Indonesia would be incredibly dangerous for him. If Ibrahim were to attempt to re-enter Indonesia, he would certainly face arrest, would likely be tortured and his life would be in danger.
I understand that there is a possibility Ibrahim may, as an alternative, be forced to travel to Malaysia. This would also be very dangerous for him due to Malaysia’s proximity to Indonesia and the ties between the two nations.
I myself have been imprisoned and tortured by Indonesia for speaking out against their occupation of West Papua, for simply telling the truth. I greatly admire Ibrahim for similarly speaking out about the situation in our country and the contributions he has made to academia. Whilst I long to return to my homeland, this is impossible until West Papuans attain self-determination and independence; it is simply too dangerous for me to return until that time. To this end I have successfully claimed asylum in the United Kingdom.
I urge you to do everything within your power to assist Ibrahim to stay in Germany. You will be helping to save his life.
Please let me know if I can be of any assistance.
With warmest wishes and thanks,
