SPAIN'S PAN-AFRICANIST FEDERATION ALERTS OF INCREASE OF RACISM - LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN
The Pan-Africanist Federation of Spain's Black Communities on Tuesday launched a campaign denouncing a mounting climate of racism in Spain and seeking justice for Miwa Buene Monake, a Congolese immigrant who was left paralysed in a neo-nazi attack.
"The attack against Miwa was not an isolated incident, but part of a general climate of racism," says Abuy Nfubea, president of the Federation who gave a press conference in Madrid.
Economist Miwa Buene Monake was attacked eight months ago on the street in Alcala de Henares near Madrid, where he worked as an interpreter. The attacker hit Miwa from behind, shouting racist insults. The African is now only able to move his head and neck. It took eight months for prosecutors to take up the case.
"Since the early 1990s, there have been dozens of racist killings of Africans in Spain," Nfubea says. "But the Spanish institutions and the public opinion try to make these attacks invisible, and courts have never issued a guilty verdict on grounds of racism."
Miwa Buene Monake was not attacked as an individual, but as the representative of a group which the attacker wanted to force to do what he wanted, namely to leave Spain, Nfubea points out. Spain's Pan-Africanist Federation therefore regards the attack against Miwa Buene Monake as a terrorist attack.
The Federation is now launching a campaign called "Justice for Miwa" to draw local Africans and their descendants into activist ranks, to denounce the silence of the Spanish state, to seek financial damages for Miwa Buene Monake, and to demand a ban on racist parties and groups which number more than 700 in Spain.
The Federation will collect signatures and stage demonstrations, festivals and consciousness campaigns in order to seek Justice for Miwa.
